This side event of the EU Raw Materials Week is co-hosted by SIRGE Coalition, and Svenska Samernas Riksförbund (SSR Sweden).
This event will explore how the EU Critical Raw Materials Act can be implemented in ways that uphold Indigenous Peoples’ rights and ensure that trust is at the core of Europe’s energy transition. Building on lessons from the OECD Mining Regions & Cities conference, the discussion will focus on Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), meaningful community engagement and decision-making, as well as equitable benefit-sharing as essential foundations for secure and sustainable supply chains. Considering that 54% of energy transition minerals are found on or near Indigenous Peoples’ lands, the CRMA implementation represents a key opportunity to align Europe’s green, digital and industrial strategy with global human rights and sustainability goals.
